The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has passed a preliminary budget that fills some of the deficits in key departments with $8 million taken from other parts of the budget.
Public safety received almost all of the money. The biggest benefactors are the Sheriff's Department and the District Attorney's office. They receive more than $7 million. That makes up a little more than half of the combined deficits of the two offices.
Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos says the department will not close any facilities or release prisoners early. But 30-to-35 vacant positions that are currently staffed by on-call officers might be eliminated.
Also receiving money are the Agricultural Commissioner, Parks Department, Probation and Public Defender.
Three-quarters of the money came from changes in payments to the employee retirement system and Department of Human Assistance.
