The Council has approved a billion-dollar budget. It includes the funding for 80 firefighters, engineers, and management staff whose jobs had been in jeopardy.
But the Sacramento Peace Officers Association is holding out. The city wants the officers to pay nine percent of retirement costs. If the union doesn't agree, 19 officers will lose their jobs.
Dustin Smith of the SPOA says neither option is acceptable.
SMITH: "The service level in the city has dropped dramatically when it comes to police response. I think we all know that. I guess my question and the media's question is how far is this really gonna go before it becomes a disaster?"
Councilman Steve Cohn says almost all of the unions have now agreed to pay.
COHN: "There's no other future for this city that I can envision where employees aren't paying their share of pension contributions."
City Manager John Shirey received council permission to continue negotiations with the union.
