The report from California's Employment Development Department says two federal surveys show an increase in the number of employed Californians compared to last year.
But the survey of business showed a slight decrease in total employment compared to March of this year. That's because there were 130,000 fewer people looking for work.
So, overall, the state's unemployment rate fell by a tenth of a percent to 10.9.
Mining and logging and transportation and utilities were among the leading gainers in employment compared to March.
But, there were 43,000 fewer government jobs compared to last year. That was the category with the biggest number of job losses.
