Two-thirds of likely voters support raising the income tax rates on the wealthiest Californians. Less than half are okay with raising the sales tax, which would affect everyone.
Stutzman: "It's almost like taking a poll to confirm that the sky is blue when the clouds clear. The public's generally in favor of raising someone else's taxes."
But Republican strategist Rob Stutzman says Brown faces a tough path to get his tax measure approved by voters this fall:
Stutzman: "The problem in these numbers is still, for the governor, the yes numbers for his measure are not as high as you really want them to be at the outset of a campaign."
For now, the TV ads haven't started, and the PPIC poll says likely voters currently favor Brown's initiative - 54 percent to 39 percent.
