The California Public Utilities Commission has determined the state has enough electricity to meet its needs through 2020.
That's why it approved a decision deferring construction of additional fossil fuel plants for two years.
Deborah Behles is an environmental lawyer with Golden Gate University. She says the ruling is an important step in advancing renewable energy:
BEHLES: We would like to see the state investing in a new infrastructure, moving toward a renewable energy future, instead of continuing to rely on old fossil fuel dirty technology.
In 2006 the commission's voted to allow the development of
some fossil fuel plants. So Behles says this action is a
significant step.
State law requires that one-third of California's energy must
come from renewables by 2020.
