Governor Jerry Brown was at the Regents meeting. He has called for more frugality in state spending. UC officials say Napolitano is responding by freezing the Office of the President’s budget and cutting UC employee travel costs 10 percent, among other measures.

“We’re doing our best to meet some of those objectives with his priorities for cutting costs and living within our means and providing students with every opportunity to graduate in a timely fashion,” says Patrick Lenz -- UC Vice President for Budget and Capital Resources

The UC says it would keep tuition fees at current levels, increase financial aid awards and add faculty with the proposed 256 million dollars it would receive in the Governor’s budget proposal.

But the UC says it would still need more state funding to increase enrollment and fully modernize facilities.
