A group called Hands on Sacramento set up eighteen different sites to serve - including parks, schools, and community centers.
Director Deanna Berg says they're doing everything from cleaning to landscaping and painting. The theme of the holiday is to "take the day on, not off."
BERG: "It's really a way to honor this great leader and hopefully engage people when they have time, and to get them to think about who MLK was, and how they can carry that legacy on despite the fact that he's no longer with us."
Kaiser Permanente sponsored the effort. Two-hundred Kaiser employees will volunteer on Monday.
