The UCLA study finds 1 in 12 Californians had signs of serious psychological stress which interfered with home or work life.
But most of these people are either getting no treatment, or not enough.
GRANT: "This affects everyone, no one's exempt no family, no one's protected by race ethnicity or income."
Lead author of the report David Grant says he was stricken by the overlap between mental health and chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease.
GRANT: "When those physicians do find physical health problems, those should be a trigger that mental health screening is something that should be done with those patients."
Grant said the people with the greatest mental health need were single adults, especially those with children, gay and sexual minorities, and American Indians.
