Mayor's Staff Nominates Him for Hall of Fame

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has been nominated for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. It’s pretty easy to be nominated, but fairly difficult to be voted in.

Anyone can nominate a former player to the hall of fame.  In the Mayor's case, it came from someone in his office.
 
Matt Zeysing is curator and historian of the hall in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He says Johnson's 17.9-points-9.1-assists-a-game-career won't be judged only by his stats.
 
ZEYSING: "Other things are taken into account, like All-Star Appearances, how many times a player was an MVP, was a first, second, or third-team-All-NBA, if they were an All-America at the collegiate level, if they made a Final Four." 
 

Johnson is ninth all time for assists per game in the NBA.  He played in three All-Star Games and was named to the All-NBA Second Team four times. He is one of only five players to average 20 points and 10 assists for three years straight. 

A secret panel of judges will whittle the fifty or so nominees down to ten by February and then announce the inductees during college basketball's Final Four.

The Mayor released this statement. "It's an honor to be even considered for the Hall of Fame. The success I enjoyed in basketball is a tribute to all the support I received throughout my career: the values instilled by my family, the guidance of my coaches, the commitment of my teammates over twelve seasons, and the support of fans in Phoenix and Sacramento who always had my back and believed in me."
