At no cost to Sacramento the company, Solar City, is installing all that energy production in city parking lots and on the roof of City Hall. In return the city agrees to purchase the electricity generated at or below conventional electricity costs for twenty years.
Yvette Rincon, is the Sustainability Project Manager for the city of Sacramento.
Rincon: "The reason why we do this because as city we don't get any of the tax breaks that are associated with solar projects like solar city would as a private firm. So those savings and the financial benefits of them pass through the city from Solar City."
The instillation has just begun and will be complete in about six months. The project will employ about 250 people.
