Mark Miller is Director of Public Services. He says they have been a little slow picking up garbage, but they're catching up.
MILLER: "We have additional assistance coming from some contract providers, particularly on the solid waste side. The rest of the divisions, we seem to be keeping up with the service requests. Of course, non-essential service requests are being deferred."
Union and city negotiators have agreed twice on deals that
would make employees pay a percentage of their own health
insurance. Union members voted down both deals.
Joan Bryant is the union's director.
BRYANT: "What the employer has on the table would be tantamount to about a $400 a month decrease in salary for these workers. And as you know, prices aren't going down. They're going up."
Garbage workers make between 19 and 23 dollars an hour.
The city is paying Atlas Disposal 48 dollars an hour per person on
an emergency basis for the same work.
