A brochure for the conference calls it the beginning of the political comeback of mainstream Republicans in California. But former state lawmaker and Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado shied away from using the word "moderate" to describe the kind of candidate these Republicans want to elect.
Maldonado: "I think the right word is putting people who are more practical, people who are willing to govern and who are willing to go back and change their behavior and listen to the people of their districts and is willing to cast the tough votes to make this state move forward."
According to the brochure, the conference will focus on the impacts of open primaries and redistricting on next year's elections. Those in attendance will also discuss, quote - "the California Republican Party's poor branding and communication problems and how to fix them."
