Tara Diller manages the county animal shelter. She says there are a number of benefits to making sure your pet is legal.
DILLER: "If the animal is running loose and our officer finds the animal running on the streets, they will contact the owner directly rather than bring that animal to the shelter. So, at that point, the owner is saving the impound costs. The pet…if it does come to the shelter , it will be held for an additional 10 days rather than the standard 3 days."
Diller says only 15 percent of animals in the county are registered as required by law. To get more people to get licenses for their pets, the county is forgiving the 100 dollar late fee for previously failing to re-register a pet and is also picking up the online fee that it normally charges. Those offers are good until October 31.
