This time of year it takes seven to ten days for a mosquito egg to develop into a flying blood-sucking insect.
"And if you think of the fact that one mosquito can lay between 50 to 200 eggs at a time," Rodriquez said. "That's definitely a lot of mosquitoes."
Luz Maria Rodriquez is with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and
Vector Control District. She says mosquitoes have been laying
eggs for a couple days now.
She says stagnant rainwater water left in buckets, birdbaths,
and tires is warmed by the sun and becomes a breeding ground for
mosquitoes. She says neglected swimming pools are the biggest
breeding ground though.
"One neglected swimming pool alone can produce hundreds of
thousands of mosquitoes and infect entire neighborhoods," Rodriguez
said.
Rodriquez says the best way to reduce mosquito populations is
to report neglected swimming pools and remove standing
water.
