Governor Brown has ordered state agencies and departments to stop hiring. That includes part-time, vacant, seasonal and full-time positions. Elizabeth Ashford in Brown's office says there will be few exceptions:
"Examples might include individuals who provide 24-hour care to vulnerable people in care facilities, but in each case, there is going to have to be a request for exemption, it's going to have to come through the Governor's office and you know, we really want to keep the reins as tight as possible."
Governor Brown says the freeze will remain in effect until
each department or agency proves it can achieve enough savings.
Brown's budget plan would shave about 360 million dollars in
operational costs next fiscal year. Brown also recently
ordered state agencies to cut in half the number of state employees
with cell phones and with cars.
