He's known for being frugal, and Brown is living up to that
reputation - at least symbolically - as he prepares to release a
harsh budget proposal Monday. The Governor says he'll
eliminate the post of Secretary of Education. As part of his
pledge to cut his own budget by a quarter, the Governor says he'll
eliminate the office of the First Lady, and won't have a Cabinet
Secretary or any Deputy Cabinet Secretaries. He's also closing
field offices in San Diego, Fresno and Riverside. The savings
add up to about seven million dollars. Brown also says he's
returning to the state 84 percent of the 770-thousand dollars
budgeted for his transition team.
