Could New Owner Redesign Railyards?

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says officials with Illinois-based lender Inland American will have to determine what they want to do with the project.

Johnson: "Are they gonna honor the original design and layout?  Or do they want to look at it differently?  And if they look at it differently, they're not developers per se.  They'll probably bring in a master developer to develop that project."

Johnson wants city officials to have a say in any new design.  For example, he says the current design has more retail space than the slumping Sacramento market can support right now.

Inland took control of the Railyards in a foreclosure auction Friday afternoon from the property's former owner, developer Thomas Enterprises.  The city has invested several years and millions of dollars in the project, which is one of the nation's largest infill development sites.
