For the last half-century, the only ways to get to the areas connected by this new trail system were by kayak or whitewater raft. And it's taken more than two decades to raise money, acquire land and build the trails. But finally, the 25-mile system is ready for the public.
Ehrgott: "Beautiful scenery, vistas along the river. And we're just very tickled that it's gonna be protected."
Alan Ehrgott with the American River Conservancy says the trails offer all sorts of activities for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians - even birdwatchers and fishers.
Ehrgott: "There are trails 1,000 feet above the river, there are trails that are just 100 feet above the river, and then there are some trail loops down right along the river at river's edge."
The system has three access points: Magnolia Ranch in Coloma, Cronan Ranch in Pilot Hill and Salmon Falls in El Dorado Hills.
