Selfish Prayer During his time in Afghanistan, flight medic
Emmett Spraktes learned that saving the lives of his fellow soldiers meant he’d have to get into some ugly face-to-face conflicts with Army officials. Armed with evidence and eyewitness accounts of bloody battles, Spraktes and fellow medics forced the Army to change flight medic training standards and double the survival rate of wounded American soldiers. Spraktes has written a book about his battle with the Army and his time as a flight medic in Afghanistan. It’s called
“Selfish Prayer,” and he joins us to talk more about the changes he spearheaded.

Winter Survival Precautions Two adults and four children were found safe Tuesday after missing for nearly two days in bitter winter conditions in rural northwestern Nevada’s rugged, mountainous Seven Troughs Range. Thanks to their ingenuity some basic survival skills, the family survived the elements. Unfortunately, winter catastrophes like this are common in the mountains, dating back to the Donner Party. A quick jaunt across the Sierra Nevada to Reno can easily turn deadly if your vehicle breaks down even on a clear day. So what do you need to know when heading into the Sierra Nevada and how do you survive if you find yourself stranded in the mountains? Joining us with some winter survival precautions is experienced snow hiker Alex Wierbinski, who has spent many hours hiking the Sierra Nevada in sub-zero temperatures.
