Jamie’s Broadway Grill Property Up For Sale
The site of a popular restaurant in Sacramento's Broadway district — Jamie's Broadway Grill — is up for sale. The listing says the property, which is at 417 and 427 Broadway, could be redeveloped into a mixed-use housing project. It's another sign that Broadway is changing from industrial to more residential and mixed-use development.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the sale doesn't necessarily mean that Jamie's is closing.
"While the redevelopment idea is one possibility, the listing also suggests buying the property as an investment to keep as is, but potentially renovate and increase income,” says Sorich. “A broker with the listing said Jamie's has about 18 months left on its lease."
After that, the future property owner and the restaurant's management would decide what happens next.
Jamie's has been open for more than 30 years. It's known for menu selections like a garlic steak sandwich and a Friday seafood platter. A few years ago, the restaurant was profiled in an episode of the TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Jamie's chef and namesake died last year.
Muntean’s Closes, El Fuego Express Mexican Grill Opens
A well-known downtown Sacramento restaurant — Muntean's Soups near 12th and J streets — closed this week. Sorich says it'll be replaced by a Mexican restaurant.
"This one surprised a lot of people,” says Sorich. “Muntean's opened in 2010 and served Greek, Hungarian and Romanian dishes. It attracted business from downtown workers, as well as people visiting the nearby Sacramento Convention Center. It's still not entirely clear why Muntean's has closed."
The new restaurant — El Fuego Express Mexican Grill — will be owned by a father-and-son team and will have a fast-casual setup. The father already owns another Mexican restaurant, FreshMex Express, which has locations in Folsom and Placerville. The downtown restaurant could open early next month.
Calling All Dreamers Semifinalists Announced
The Calling All Dreamers competition announced its 10 semi-finalists this week. This is the annual contest that helps the winner open a business in downtown Sacramento. Sorich says this year's mix of business ideas range from a healthy eatery called Hello Puddin Chia Company to a specialty party supply store called Ready Set Confetti.
"Other ideas include an escape room business, a nail bar and retailers specializing in handmade, local products,” says Sorich. “The winner will receive a startup business package valued at more than $100,000."
The 10 semi-finalists will now work on their business plans. The top concepts will later move on to a public voting phase of the competition. Previous winners include Andy's Candy Apothecary and Oblivion Comics and Coffee.
Last year's winner, a business that will sell presidential-themed milkshakes, hasn't opened yet but is moving forward in Old Sacramento. The contest is presented by the Downtown Sacramento Foundation, a sister organization of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.
