Mefistofele is an opera in a prologue, four acts and an epilogue, the only completed opera by the Italian composer-librettist Arrigo Boito. The opera is based on the Faust legend about an aged philosopher who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for youth and love. The opera was given its premiere on March 5, 1868 at La Scala, Milan under the baton of the composer. This 1974 studio recording stars Norman Treigle, Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. Julius Rudel conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.
