Sac County's New Midyear Budget Deficit: $15 million

County budget officer Tom Burkart says sales, property and hotel taxes are all falling behind expectations.

Burkart: “Revenues in general and the economy in general has not improved, or even stayed the same as what we thought it would at the beginning of the year, so some of our revenues are coming up short.”

Officials haven’t decided how much will be cut from each program, but Burkart says it’s likely that all departments will take a hit.

The county must also start making up for all the one-time fixes in this year’s budget to avoid even more painful cuts next year. And Burkart says it’s harder to make cuts in the middle of a budget – because you have to go deeper to get the same amount of benefit.

County supervisors will get their first look at specific budget cuts late next month.
