California hopes to get an accurate population count in the upcoming census.

But, the state’s fiscal crisis could mean fewer dollars to promote the census among minorities.

Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...

The census is taken every decade and it helps determine how much money the federal government sends to California and the state’s political representation in Washington.

In the year 2000, the state spent 24-million dollars on census outreach.   This year its only two-million.

California Census Director Ditas Katague hopes the federal government will send more money for census media messages targeting people who don’t speak English...

Katague: “What we’re worried about is will California’s ethnic media outlets get the fair share buy that they should get. As we know California is always on the short end of the stick on this so we’re really hopeful that our congressional delegation can say ‘Hey’ make sure California gets its fair share...”

Census surveys will be mailed in March, and then census workers will visit homes that don’t respond to the questionnaires.

The census is required under the U-S Constitution and its results must be sent to the president by the end of the year.
