Turlock Mayor Gary Soiseth set a goal of a thousand American flags over the city by Veterans Day to showcase the city’s patriotism.
Soiseth started the Thousand Flag Initiative in March after a retired Marine found someone had removed his flag from in front of his home and burned it.
He challenged organizations, businesses and residents to fly the stars and stripes by Veterans Day.
Soiseth says the city has met the challenge and the flags are up and ready.
“To see the flags flying up and down Canal or Main Street, to see them all on our light poles and in front of our houses and businesses, it’s quite a sight to see. In fact, you can sit in my front yard and see 6 flags from one spot," Soiseth said.
Soiseth says Veterans Day is just the start and expects the flags will be flying high on future holidays from Memorial Day to the 4th of July.
