More than 500 parking spaces in downtown Stockton are free for the taking because there’s no parking meter, but that time is coming to an end.
Thieves have stolen hundreds of parking meters over the last year in Downtown Stockton. The city has tried to replace the meters but only to see the same meters stolen again.
Starting Monday, citations will be given to cars that exceed the posted parking limits even if the meter is missing.
Stockton Parking Manager Tina McCarty said downtown parking should be short term but that hasn’t been the case lately.
“It’s becoming a detriment to our businesses in the downtown because employees that are parking all day on the street and that’s not allowing the turnover in those street spaces which is what the businesses need for the customers to come in,” McCarty said.
McCarty said while some parking meters are gone, there are signs still posted showing the time limits and violators will be cited and fined.
She said over the next few weekends about 100 new meters will be reinstalled in downtown and reinforced to prevent theft.
