Insight: Effect of Yosemite Closure on Surrounding Communities / New Breast Cancer Drug / Girls Love Mail / Sound Advice: Classical

Rim Fire-Yosemite Closure Double Whammy If anywhere needed a federal government shutdown less, it’s probably the California community of Groveland.  The small foothill town depends on tourists to stop and spend money while en route to Yosemite National Park.  But smoke from the recent Rim Fire kept tourists and their dollars away during the peak season for visiting Yosemite.  Now, political wrangling in congress has forced the park’s closure just as tourists started to return.  Joining us to explain how Groveland and surrounding communities are getting hit with a one-two punch from the Rim Fire and the closure of Yosemite is Capital Public Radio’s Central Valley Reporter Rich Ibarra.  We’ll also hear from the co-owner of Groveland’s Iron Door Saloon, who says the park’s closure is “tragic” when it comes to business.

Girls Love Mail Continuing our discussion of breast cancer, we’re exploring the less tangible ways of treating the disease.  Consider how an optimistic or pessimistic outlook could affect the way you handle chemotherapy and other difficult stages of cancer treatment, and now consider how opening the mailbox and seeing a handwritten love letter of support could boost your optimism.  It could potentially alter your chances for beating cancer.  And that’s the idea behind Girls Love Mail, which is a letter writing project for breast cancer patients.  Founder Gina Mulligan joins us to explain more.
