After failing to pass a 2015 provision that would have cut California fuel use in half over time, Governor Jerry Brown has increasingly turned his attention to the transportation sector, California’s single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
On Tuesday, he signed 11 measures to that end. The new laws extend existing benefits, such as HOV lane use for electric vehicles and designating income-levels at which clean vehicle purchasers can receive rebates, while other bills raise the amount of electric and alternative fuel cars, trucks and buses state agencies must purchase for their fleets.
Two new laws open the way for electric utilities to build vehicle charging stations at parks and beaches, and bill ratepayers for the expense.
California has a goal of putting 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025—currently there are less than 300,000.
