Students going through orientation at McClatchy High School today had their first chance to see $23 million dollars in improvements to art, music and theater facilities.
Projects include renovation to the auditorium, new work stations for ceramics and new audio and video production facilities.
Eli Veazey is a senior and is looking forward to playing in the new band room.
"We were basically in an old lunch room last year just waiting for this to be renovated and now that it's here, it's absolutely incredible," says Veazey. "Clearly, it's so much prettier and so much room to practice and the acoustics are 100 times better. There's no echo at all in here."
Molly Morrison teaches 3D art and theater production.
"We have worked so hard to create the right curriculum and the right classes and now we have the right facilities to match the interests of the kids so that they can have a four-year experience here at McClatchy," says Morrison. "Specifically for 3D art, having a technical classroom, a workshop, a woodshop to create sets and things we need to do for the theater production is just going to be outstanding."
Peter Lambert is the school principal. He says the school will be able to offer state-of-the-art venues.
"Many of our students' work have been featured at the Crocker Art Museum and at different galleries throughout the city and so now it just allows us to really build on those partnerships and take it to the next level," says Lambert.
The school was built in 1937.
