A nationwide campaign to crack down on motorcyclists driving drunk or impaired starts Thursday, with local police and the CHP will be out in force until after the Labor Day holiday.
Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over is the name of the campaign to save lives by stopping motorcycle drivers under the influence.
Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva said saturation patrols will be on the lookout especially between the late afternoon and the early morning hours.
“We have seen an increase in motorcycle related deaths and accidents as a result of motorcyclists driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs,” Silva said
Silva said in 2015, 5,000 drivers and their riders died in motorcycle crashes, an 8 percent increase over the year before.
He said younger drivers accounted for almost half of the deadly accidents.
Silva said over 60 percent of motorcyclists killed in single-vehicle crashes on weekend nights were alcohol related.
